Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Trying to gain a better insight into how Mercury operates through the signs.  Mine is in Sagittarius, and I think I learn best through travel and adventure - I need to "experience" life in order to get interested in it.  I was told this by a shaman once and then it clicked with my Mercury being in Sag (along with 3 other planets).  Wondering if others with Mercury in Sag have the same experience and also how that planet operates in all the other signs as well.  Especially Mercury in Pisces, that is such an elusive one.  And Mercury in Taurus too.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

I have Mercury in Taurus.  I ponder things slowly and carefully.  I will sometimes think about things for a long time before I make up my mind about something.  Although it may take me a little longer to learn some things, once it's in there, it's in for good.

Having said all that, I also have Sag on the 3rd house cusp and I think that adds a twist to how my mind operates day-to-day.  It often leaps ahead of itself in thinking and speaking.  And I'm almost always future-focused, talking about what I'd like to do.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

my Mercury is in Scorpio.  On my midheaven.  I have had more jobs than I can count.  Mercury, the traveler, has moved me silently from one job to another.  Most of my jobs require communication, sometimes alot of it (I have Jupiter in Gemini) BUT I also have long periods of silence in many of my jobs.  I work best in the silence.

Deep, deep silence.  I hold all my feelings in.  Sometimes my communications with people feel like they smoothly go from here to there, but other times I wonder if they see me as peculiar, not speaking much when not necessary.

I have Sun and Part of fortune in Sag.  both in the 11th house.  I love to be around Sag energy.  My husband has a sag rising, my son is dating a sag rising.....my twins have Sag midheavens.

I was really surprised to hear last night that my son dating the sag rising doesn't want to buy a home and settle down.    He wants to rent long term and never buy a home.  But, not sure why I would wonder when I look at my own life and the twists and turns buying property has brought in.

Freedom calls me.  Owning property ties us down sometimes.  When I was very young, in my early years....I wouldn't own anything that wouldn't fit in a backpack.  Very Sag time.  Probably had all my Scorpio planets progressed into Sag then.

Wow, I have 3 planets in Sag. I want to be able to fit everything - including my bed - I own into a hatchback. If it doesn't fit I'm fine w/jettisoning it. I used to be attached to my books and thought of them as my library as I had some expensive items in there, but now I couldn't give a damn, it's just stuff.

My Merc's in Cap. I am pragmatic in my thinking and conservative in terms of efficiency (not politically). Unlike earth signs, I think and act very rashly, I think b/c Mars is conj my ASC. I make decisions very quickly and forcefully, even when I know I don't have all the info I need. You will rarely find me mulling over a decision, and if you do, it's usually just an intellectual exercise and I already know what I'll do. I approach many texts - written, aural, etc. in the same manner, I just bulldoze right through them, scanning for what information is useful to me and disregarding the rest. This level of impatience makes me a really poor listener unless communication is quick in which case that is fun. I am not good at speaking impromptu either - it's like my mouth is just too slow for my mind.

In terms of learning, I have frequently been told that I am a very fast learner. I'm not aware of any specific mode that suits me. I am goal oriented which is pretty typical of Capricorn.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Mercury in Virgo - but only 9 minutes shy of Libra!

I am able to get my head around vast amounts of detail, particularly of a practical nature, mainly because I'm very good at grouping and organising it mentally.
I'm an analyser.

Perhaps because of the almost-Libranness of it, I am able to see all sides of an issue and often take a long time deciding a course of action. On the other hand, I can sometimes act quite impulsively without thinking at all (Moon rising in Aries).

So when I communicate, especially about work or practical matters, it's usually the organised detail  that comes through, either verbally or written. If I'm  communicating information to help someone make a decision, I like to present as many angles as possible, for and against. I like balance.

I like precision in communication and I can't abide sloppy spelling, punctuation or grammar. And I detest people who don't enunciate clearly. Really would like to string them up on the clothes-line.

In love and intimate friendships, I like to communicate, period. I could spend hours just listening to another person reflect on their emotional, spiritual and psychological truths - provided it is truthful, considered and meaningful. I love to sit down with someone close and say, well what do you think about that... and then weigh their reflections and insights in the still pool of my own soul. This could have a lot to do with Venus and Mars in water signs and air houses, perhaps.

Conversely, I don't suffer fools gladly. Short on patience. Expect every word to matter.

In learning, my natural approach varies with the kind of things being learned: tasks - learn best by doing; information - learn best by seeing and hearing; names and facts - learn best by repeating. I don't regard myself as a fast learner, but as a thorough learner with an often astonishing recall. Have an annoying habit of remembering conversations verbatim years after the event.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

This is an interesting thread.  I wanted to note that "holding my feelings in" has to do with my besieged Moon, but also that Scorpionic tendency to hold things deep.

Isthmus, Mars on Asc!  Wow.  I always know when Mars comes up to my Cap ASC I am in for a real rush.  I have to watch my tongue (and not speak too fast and be too harsh) and i have LOTS of energy to get projects done!!!!  What sign is your natal Mars in?

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

I've got Mercury in Pisces in the 7th house.  I really haven't explored Mercury in my chart too much, but here's a couple things I know about this placement in my chart:

1.  I love, love, love music and I can just never have enough of it.  It affects me like nothing else.  And sometimes I just like to be on my own (like when I go to the beach in the summer) with my headphones and listen to music all day and be alone in my thoughts.

2.  I'm very much a romantic . . . but not in the candlelight way.  More like I want to believe in things like fate and destiny and soul mates.  This has gotten me into a whole lot of trouble sad

3.  The 7th house placement means I need a partner I can chat with, share ideas with, share books, films, and music with.  If I can't have that intellectual exchange, I lose interest very quickly.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

I've got Mercury in Aries and I tend to think in lightning bursts.  I'm well known among my friends for starting out a sentence with one point, pausing as another idea occurs to me (sometimes without a pause) and then going right into another point without taking a breath. I have the worst time with that when I type, because my mind just forges ahead and sometimes I'll omit whole words or phrases in my haste to get it all down to match the pace at which it goes through my brain.

I definitely dominate conversations if I don't pay attention, and very often end up in a leadership role of any group I'm in, simply because I always have something relevant to say. I'm also -very- bad at interrupting. I've worked hard to keep from being rude, but sometimes it escapes me. Thankfully that doesn't happen online. smile

My Mercury is also conjunct my Moon, so I can keep my feelings hidden if I choose when I speak, but I'm also very skilled at expressing them. I use that to teach difficult concepts to people - I use my Moon intuitively to assess what examples and level of communication resonate with them, and then I will tailor my speech to their needs. I often doesn't even know rationally what I'm doing, and instead it just happens.

Paula - it's in Aquarius. When transiting Mars is conj my ASC/Mars conj, I have a LOT of energy lol. It doesn't feel like a rush. Energy levels are steady and consistent, and I can be super rapid or hyper focused, no fatigue.

I for one really identify with all of the descriptions relating to Sag in all of these posts (four planets including mercury there).

Also wondering if any Mercury in Taurus people tend toward frankness in their communication style...?  Is this quality something that stands about about the way in which Taurus people communicate?

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

I have Mercury in Aries like Keishin-- and she nailed it.  I think fast, type fast, speak fast, pick up new ideas fast.  Yet I have a very short attention span.  What I don't pick up on very quickly, I tend to get frustrated then bored.  Unless it's interesting enough (like astrology), then I keep at it until I have it down.  And Mercury is retrograde, which trips me up a lot, because I often move too fast, not explaining things thoroughly.  Mercury is at my Moon/Neptune midpoint.  If I am not conscious and careful of having to slow down and ask questions, I can leave out important pieces of what I wanted to say.  I tend to explain things using word pictures and analogies.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Keishin mentioned interrupting - I have a tendency to (try to) finish people's sentences which I get very annoyed about.  I have to work very hard to stop myself from doing this.  I don't think it's Merc in Taurus.  Perhaps more that 3rd house Sag I mentioned earlier...?  I think I do it more to people I'm very close to like my partner and close very friends.  Which may be my 7th house House Aries cusp with Mars in Cancer on the MC?  Not sure.  I don't think I do it to people I don't know very well...

Speaking frankly?  hmmmm, I think so, although I may need to ask some people close to me to check what they think.  I'll get back to you smile

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Hi ya... I have Mercury in Cancer, sextile Pluto, Trine Neptune.

When I was in grade school, I simply couldn't handle all of the auditory stimuli (was too sensitive?) and would withdraw to read a book tucked in my desk:  but if my teachers just left me alone with the book, I could teach it to myself with no stress .  Had a fabulous memory when I was younger (Latin, Greek, French, German) I guess that would be the Pluto energy? Now everything is much more fuzzy...I mean, conceptual ! (that could be Neptune, or being over 40, take yr pick :>)

I work as a writer now - gotta do something with all that extra Cancer emotion, right? -- so might as well displace it onto the page. I also still need to be in places of quiet to be able to connect and think... cannot bear outside noise....!  The connection thing really does feel like *heaven* ... watching the stories in my head (Neptune?) while I type is a lot more fun for me than watching TV...

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

My sister has Mercury in Libra and people are constantly telling her what a nice voice she has on the phone.  It is very feminine and soothing.  She is also extremely fair-minded, sometimes to a fault, IMHO - always cutting slack to people even when they don't deserve it.  I'm trying to remember now if I've ever heard her say a bad word about anyone, and, come to think of it, I don't think I have.  Her sun is in Virgo and it's not that she won't be critical of anyone, but when she is she does it in a very constructive way without putting the person down.  Recently, I saw her get angry at someone who very much deserved it (believe me they deserved it) and then afterward she felt bad about it.  Her Mars is in Libra too which I'm sure plays into it as well.

I wonder if Obama's Mercury in Leo is responsible for his engaging oratory skills.  He is quite animated and never dry when he speaks.

Also, his speeches inspire people to live to their greatest potential  - a big theme when he speaks - to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and be the great people they are - this is all very Leo I think (potential and doing one's best).

My Mercury is in Sag. Sometimes words come out my mouth before I realise that I'm going to say them. I'm trying to train myself to think hard before I speak, but I'm not doing that well!

I work in publishing and I read a lot.

My brother has his Merc in Virgo and he can be quite pedantic. Sometimes he drives me nuts when he doesn't just let my 'lazy' sentences go.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Just thought of someone else I know with Mercury in Libra.  He also has a very pleasant and feminine way of speaking, but holy cow he can be very sharp-tongued when he wants to be - he has Mars square to his Mercury which must explain this.  The "nice" tone to his voice has never felt authentic to me in this person - like it's deliberately put on in order to falsely ingratiate himself toward some gain.  Perhaps the "manipulative" function of Mercury is enhanced by the contact from Mars....????

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

I have Mercury in Capricorn. I'm a critical thinker and like to play devil's advocate - or used to more when I was younger. I tend to see the gaps in people's logic, the grammatical errors, the better way they could be teaching something. I (also!) have 4 planets in Sag - and sometimes, again more when I was younger, put foot in mouth. I don't like waffling around or indirectness. I hate meetings or hearing people repeat themselves or put a false face on. Don't I sound charming? I often don't let people see the critical side but it's there even though ameliorated with (some) maturity or compassion. Merc is in 10th - so i have a lot of stuff about teaching w all those Sag planets in the 9th.

My Mars is just now progressing out of Sag which is coinciding with my moving to the first house I plan to spend more than a year living in - since I turned 16 (now 38) - oops i did live in one house for 2 years but always knew that I'd be moving on and never really settled in. That's not really about Mercury but since people were discussing Sag and so forth.

This is interesting, and I totally agree, EXCEPT... when he is working and not making a "speech," he is very dry.  Have you seen his press conferences?  He says "uhhhh..." a lot and measures his words very carefully.  He can be very boring.  And when he's among the people, his speech is very different, friendly and colloquial.  It's like his Mercury has a few different settings.

Molly,

I agree!  I attribute his dryness and his measured words to his Aquarius south node - intelligent, detached, and up in his head a lot.  Then, when he gives a public speech, he "performs" like a Leo.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Mercury in Virgo here, and I'm similar to Plutonia. Writing comes easily to me and my pet peeves include spelling and grammar. I love to speed through a first draft and then edit, edit, edit, until I feel it's near perfect.

I'm also generally very polite and am easily annoyed by people who talk loudly or in a coarse way.

My Mercury is in Sag as well, but it is in an exact conj with Neptune.  I love to read and can experience things either directly or indirectly.  I love music and enjoy writing.  I can talk about things based purely on intuition and I can definitely get lost in my thoughts for hours on end.  I have to make a conscious effort not to cut off my words when I speak because my mind definitely thinks faster than I can get the words out.

Re: Mercury in...how do you learn and communicate?

Anyone out there with Mercury in Pisces that can share how this placement functions?  Is it difficult, perhaps, to express oneself with this position?  I have Mercury conjunct Neptune, and at times I feel as if my explanations come forth in the most confusing, jumbled way.  I wonder if the other person understands what I'm saying at all.  At other times, I know I can sound quite eloquent and poetic.  I enjoy writing and have the ability to put forth very descriptive and vivid images in my writing - my sentences sometimes sound more like poetry than prose.  Sometimes my sentences trail off at the end when I speak in unfinished thoughts, and at times I find it to be a great effort to have to talk at all, usually when I'm forced to " chit chat" with someone when I'd rather be alone in my own thoughts, like in a work situation or something.

I have merc in scorpio conj neptune. You sure wouldn't guess I have Moon in Gemini haha. I don't talk very much & I hate hate hate superficial "small talk." I don't like talking on the phone, either. My husband also has a Gemini moon but not aspected like mine & everybody in every shop and store within 10 miles of us knows him haha because he is Mr Chatterbox haha.

I feel the same way Daria (I have Saturn in the 3rd so it might be that too). I write way better than I speak.
